Salar de Uyuni located in southwestern Bolivia, in Daniel Campos province, near the Andes, is the world’s largest natural salt field formed by the movement of the earth’s crust. Located at an altitude of 3,656m with an area of about 10,582 square kilometre and perfectly flat, Salar de Uyuni is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country.
About 40,000 years ago, this area was part of the giant saltwater lake Minchin, when the water in the lake gradually dried up to reveal two small lakes and two salt fields, Salar de Uyuni and Salar de Coipasa. People also call this destination salt deserts, in which Salar de Uyuni is larger than Salar de Coipasa and 25 times larger than the famous Bonneville salt field in America.
Salar de Uyuni in winter is completely dry, covered with dry salt. When the rainy days in summer comes, the field is always flooded again, accidentally turning into a giant mirror. The blue sky, white clouds and the natural scenery reflected in the mirror create a magical beauty that is true and vivid in every detail.

Besides the breathtaking scenery, when coming to Salar de Uyuni in November, you can see three beautiful South American flamingo species, the James flamingo, the Andean flamingo and the Chilean flamingo, will gather to enter the breeding season. Besides, you will also see herds of llamas, Andes geese, Culpeo fox, Vizcacha rabbit, … or giant cactus species in this salt field.

There are many ways to get to Salar de Uyuni, you can choose to book a flight to La Paz city – the third most populous city in Bolivia, from where you can take a bus, train or plane to reach Uyuni town. Or you can also find travel agencies and book tours there.
