What is Hogmanay Festival?
The last day of the year is celebrated with many Scottish traditions, one of which is the “first step”. On the first day of the new year, friends and family begin walking into each other’s doorstep with a gift. The first person to enter the door will give the host a gift next year. The special gifts are a coin (financial prosperity), coal (representing warmth), bread (food) or whiskey (fun).
UK Hogmanay is said to have started by Vikings wanting to celebrate the winter solstice. In fact, in Viking tradition, the first step should always be a handsome, black-haired man! Scots celebrate Hogmanay from December 30 to January 2 (it’s a holiday), there’s an event every day and now it’s Hogmanay festival.
